Twardzik Honors Pottsville Maroons with Centennial Resolution

December 18, 2025

HARRISBURG – Rep. Tim Twardzik (R-Schuylkill) is proud to announce the passage of his House Resolution 277, officially designating Aug. 16, 2025, as Pottsville Maroons Championship Day in the Commonwealth, honoring the 100th anniversary of one of Pennsylvania’s most legendary football teams.

The resolution commemorates the remarkable 1925 season of the Pottsville Maroons, a professional football team from Schuylkill County. Composed largely of local coal miners, the Maroons defeated the Chicago Cardinals in what many consider the true NFL championship game and later bested the Notre Dame All-Stars, featuring members of the legendary Four Horsemen.

“The Maroons’ legacy remains a source of pride in Schuylkill County,” said Twardzik. “They embodied the grit and determination of our region, and their story continues to inspire generations. I’ve long supported efforts to see their title rightfully recognized, and today’s resolution is a meaningful step in honoring their place in football history.”

Although the team was controversially stripped of its championship title by the league, the Maroons have remained a symbol of perseverance and community pride. In 1963, the NFL named the Maroons one of its all-time greatest teams.

House Resolution 277 passed with bipartisan support and was met with enthusiastic approval on the House floor.
